Synthetic Cartilage for Arthritic Joints
Finally, there is an option for arthritic joints that maintains motion in the joint. The Cartiva implant has been used in Europe extensively and the 5-year study is encouraging for patients that suffer from Hallux Limitus and Hallux Rigidus.
Our Post-op Protocol:
- 1st week. Limited walking in a surgical shoe. The incision is kept dry.
- 2nd week. Sutures are removed. The range of motion exercises is started. Normal bathing may resume if the incision is completely healed. Continue limited walking in a surgical shoe. Start physical therapy.
- 5th week. Return to the sneaker. Continue physical therapy. Exercise on a bicycle or in a pool.
- The return to heavy exercise may occur between 3 and 6 months, depending on symptoms. Each individual will vary.
